China J1 Visa (Resident Journalist) Guide 2025

The J1 visa is for foreign journalists who are resident correspondents of foreign news organizations stationed in China. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.

Who Qualifies

  • Resident journalists employed by foreign news agencies with official press credentials
  • Applicants must be assigned to China for long-term reporting (over 180 days) and have approval from the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China

Required Documents

  • Original passport (valid for at least 6 months, with at least 2 blank visa pages)
  • Completed Visa Application Form (COVA), printed and signed
  • Recent passport photo (color, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Copy of previous Chinese visas and entry/exit stamps (if applicable)
  • Copy of driver’s license (front and back, if required by consulate)
  • Job and company/organization description form (including applicant’s job title, company name, job description, and company description)
  • Official letter from the media organization employing the journalist
  • Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China
  • Proof of legal stay/residence (if applying outside your country of citizenship)
  • Additional documents as required by the consulate or embassy

Application Process

  1. Contact the press office of the Chinese Embassy/Consulate General in advance to complete relevant formalities and obtain the required Visa Notification Letter.
  2. Complete the COVA online visa application form and print all required pages.
  3. Gather all required documents.
  4. Book an appointment at your local Chinese embassy, consulate, or visa center (if required).
  5. Submit your application in person or via an authorized agent; provide fingerprints if required.
  6. Wait for processing (typically 4–7 business days, but can vary).
  7. Collect your passport and visa or arrange for return by mail if available.

After Arrival: Residence Permit

  • The J1 visa is valid for 30 days from the date of arrival. Within this period, you and your local organization must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit at the local Public Security Bureau (PSB), which will be valid for the duration of your contract (up to 5 years).
