China D Visa (Permanent Residence) Guide 2025

The D visa is for foreigners who intend to settle in China permanently. It is the entry visa for those approved for Chinese permanent residency (the “Chinese green card”).

Who Qualifies

Applicants must have already been approved for permanent residency by the Ministry of Public Security of China. Common eligibility categories include:

  • High-level foreign professionals employed in China for 4+ years
  • Foreigners married to Chinese citizens for 5+ years and living in China
  • Investors who have made substantial, approved investments in China
  • International talent recognized by Chinese authorities
  • Foreign children of Chinese citizens or permanent residents

Required Documents

  • Original passport (valid for at least 6 months, with blank visa pages)
  • Completed Visa Application Form (COVA), printed and signed
  • Recent passport photo (color, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Proof of legal stay/residence (if applying outside your country of citizenship)
  • Original and photocopy of the Confirmation Form for Alien Permanent Residence Status, issued by the Ministry of Public Security of China
  • Additional documents as required by the consulate (e.g., previous Chinese visas, health certificate, no criminal record, proof of investment, marriage certificate, etc.)

Application Process

  1. Obtain approval for permanent residency and receive the Confirmation Form for Alien Permanent Residence Status.
  2. Complete the COVA online visa application form and print all required pages.
  3. Gather all required documents.
  4. Book an appointment at your local Chinese embassy, consulate, or visa center (if required).
  5. Submit your application in person or via an authorized agent; provide fingerprints if required.
  6. Wait for processing (can take several weeks).
  7. Collect your passport and D visa or arrange for return by mail if available.

After Arrival: Permanent Resident Permit

  • Within 30 days of entry, register your address at the local police station.
  • Apply for the Permanent Resident Permit (“Chinese green card”) at the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) Exit-Entry Administration.
  • Processing time is 6–12 months; the permit is valid for 5–10 years depending on your category.
  • Children under 18 typically receive a 5-year permit.
